This Privacy Policy explains how VidRand (“VidRand,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use our website (the “Service”). VidRand is a free tool for discovering YouTube videos and channels by interest. We have designed it to collect as little information about you as possible.

Summary

• We do not require an account, and you never sign in.
• We never ask for or access your Google or YouTube account, and we do not request any authorization (OAuth) to your accounts.
• We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising.
• We use anonymous, privacy-focused analytics to understand aggregate usage. We do not collect personal information that identifies you.
• VidRand uses YouTube API Services to find and display videos. Your use of those features is also governed by the policies of YouTube and Google, linked below.

Information we collect

We collect only the following limited information:

Information you provide

The only inputs you give VidRand are the three interests and the video length you select. These selections are sent to our server so we can search YouTube for matching videos. We do not tie these selections to your identity.

Information stored in your browser

VidRand stores a small amount of data locally in your browser using localStorage:

• Your selected theme (Minimal, Dark, or Playful).
• Your most recently used interests and video length, so they can be restored on your next visit.

This data never leaves your device except as part of a normal search request, and you can clear it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data for VidRand.

Analytics information

We use PostHog, a privacy-focused analytics provider, to understand how VidRand is used in aggregate. Analytics are configured to be anonymous: we do not create user profiles tied to your real identity, and we do not enable session recording or broad automatic event capture. We record events such as page views, searches performed (the selected interests and length), shuffles, videos played, and error or empty states. PostHog automatically derives approximate, coarse geographic information (such as country and city) from your IP address; we do not store your full IP address for this purpose, and we do not use it to identify you.

Server logs

Our hosting provider may process standard technical information (such as IP address and request metadata) as part of delivering the Service and protecting it from abuse. We use a short-lived, in-memory rate limit keyed on IP address to prevent automated abuse of our search endpoint. We do not maintain long-term logs that profile individual users.

How we use information

• To search YouTube and return videos matching your selections.
• To remember your theme and last-used selections on your device.
• To understand aggregate usage and improve the Service through anonymous analytics.
• To protect the Service from abuse, including rate limiting and maintaining availability.

YouTube API Services

VidRand uses YouTube API Services to search for videos and display embedded YouTube players. By using VidRand, you are also agreeing to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service.

Information handled by Google in connection with YouTube API Services is used and protected in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy.

When you play an embedded video, your browser loads content directly from YouTube, and YouTube may set cookies and collect information in accordance with its own policies. VidRand does not request or receive access to your YouTube or Google account, your watch history, your subscriptions, or any other personal Google data. Because VidRand never obtains authorization to your Google account, there is no VidRand access for you to revoke. You can review and manage the third-party apps that do have access to your Google account at Google’s security settings page.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers that make VidRand work:

• Google / YouTube — search queries are sent to the YouTube Data API to retrieve videos, and embedded players load content from YouTube.
• PostHog — anonymous analytics events as described above.
• Our hosting provider — to serve the website and protect it from abuse.

We may also disclose information if required to do so by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of VidRand or others.

Data retention

The interests and length you select are processed to fulfill your search and are not stored by us in a way that identifies you. Theme and last-used selections live in your browser’s local storage until you clear them. Anonymous analytics data is retained by PostHog according to its retention settings.

Children’s privacy

VidRand is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Search results are filtered using YouTube’s moderate SafeSearch setting, but we cannot guarantee that all content surfaced by YouTube is appropriate for all ages.

Your choices

• You can clear VidRand’s locally stored data at any time by clearing your browser’s site data.
• You can use browser settings or extensions to limit analytics and cookies.
• You can manage third-party access to your Google account at Google’s security settings page.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of VidRand after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
